Counseling Department (Grades K - 2)
Instructor: Mrs. Bertram

Parents, Students, Community Members, and Friends:

Happy Fall!  The holiday season is just around the corner! During these times, we also have in our hearts loved ones that have passed on before us.  This can be a very difficult time for adults and children.

The Counseling Department would like to share some special news for families!  We have invited Bereavement & Grief Specialists from Hospice Support Care to come to our school.  We will be hosting an informational workshop on Understanding Children’s Grief and Bereavement Process and how it effects the family system and child as a whole.  We are pleased to have:

Ms. Sharron Simpson, Adult Bereavement Program Coordinator,

&

Ms. Carol Ellia, MHR, Children & Teen Bereavement Program Coordinator

in our school for a special night of coming together to understand Bereavement and it’s effect on our children. Often, we find ourselves sitting with children that have had difficulty working through their own grief, and would like to empower parents with the information and skills to address this sensitive issue at home.  Hospice Care will also be bringing “Gus,”  who is a therapy dog.  We will be holding this session on:
November 18th, 2009 from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. here at our school in our library.
Families that may be interested in attending can call Mrs. Fiddler or Mrs. Calisha Bertram with questions, or confirming attendance.  If requested, children can also have access to a grief workshop that evening.  Please give us a call to let us know you will be joining us!  (540) 286-1956.

What is a School Counselor?

A school counselor is a helper in your school. She helps kids with things like problem solving, understanding feelings, and making friends!

I provide a variety of services to the children, parents, teachers, and staff of the school. These services include but are not limited to:

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Planned, educational groups designed to help students understand and deal with normal developmental tasks and issues.  Examples include character education, peer relationships, conflict resolution, and personal safety. They also provide an important opportunity for non-referred students to interact with the counselor.

Individual Counseling

For students whose needs cannot be met within the regular classroom environment or within a support group, I also offer individual counseling on a regular basis. Typically, I see students for one or two times , or additional sessions to address ongoing concerns.

Social Groups

The counselor hosts various groups such as “Lunch Bunch” and “New Students” which allow students to socialize with one another and the counselor without the structure of a formal counseling group.

Small Group Counseling

The counselor works with a small  group of students who have been referred for similar issues.  This format is goal-centered and oriented toward enhancing and developing coping skills.  Some common types of counseling groups deal with divorce, friendship, self-esteem, anger, and grief or loss.  These groups are confidential.

Referral Assistance

The counselor maintains a comprehensive list of specialists who may be helpful in the event of a concern beyond the scope of school counseling services.

Difficulty Transitioning To School

It is not unusual for a child to experience separation issues after an extended time with family or when faced with a new challenge. Getting back to school after summer vacation, weekends, and holidays are often a time when separation issues arise.

When your child returns home from school via the bus or your pick-up (if that's the plan), recognize your child's working through his feelings and getting into a good place to enter the classroom. Provide some time during dinner for him/her to share some of the highlights of his/her day at school.

Remind your child of his/her past successes with managing things that are hard.

Express confidence in your child's ability to handle this challenge and let him/her know that you are feeling very good about the school, the bus driver and the people at school who supported him.

Explain to your child that she/he will be riding the school bus tomorrow and make arrangements for the other parent, if possible, to put her/him on the bus. It's good to rotate this if you can.

As a part of the plan, talk about who he/she would like to sit with on the bus. It could be a sibling or a neighbor who rides the same bus. If it's a neighbor, call the other child's parent to see if this would work out. Of course, your child could also make the arrangements for this.

Your child may want to put something special in his/her pocket or back pack to share and/or to serve as a connection to home. You could even ask your child what would help him/her make the transition from home to school easier with the bottom line always being that he/she has to go and he/she has to take the bus. If there seems to be a problem on the bus, let the school know so that it can be looked into and addressed.

When the time arrives to leave for school, be prepared to be firm even in the face of tears.

Be kind to yourself. It's not easy to put an upset child on the bus or leave him or her at school. Once you have established a connection with people at school and have determined that all is well there for your child, it's easier to follow through with getting him/her on the bus or dropping him/her at the designated drop off point at school.

Parents are key to the success of the plan.

Separation issues can sometimes return after a week-end, a vacation, a child's being out of school due to illness, or an upsetting event. If separation issues do return, acknowledge that you and your child have done a great job handling tough stuff in the past and that you and s/he and the school will work together to get through this one.
